2009 Midnight Run

Ran the same dogs as the Beargrease. The dogs ran great and lost only to the Gilbertson team. The first run started with 10 miles of soft punchy trail. For several days before the race the area was battered with high winds and tons of new snow. Booties filled with ice balls and made for slow running with lots of stops. We finished loping the last 17 miles into Deerton to a great checkpoint camp site set up by Brian. The dogs had a great rest and everybody ate and drank. After the vet check, we had one slightly swollen wrist and no other issues. The run to Munising we left second only 13 seconds in front of Dawn Breedlove. We ran with her for a while before losing sight of her for about an hour. We finally caught her, passed, and spent another hour before finally shaking her. The last 10 miles was a fun windy trail to the finish in town to a big crowd. Overall it was a great race, but we have some work to do in training to beat the Gilbertsons' best dogs. We will definitely be back next year! Thanks to my brother Brian! He flew out from Portland and did a great job managing the checkpoint.
