Day 31: The Road Home

Friday, March 15th 2013 Grande Prarie, AB to Claresholm, AB ~520 miles

The Super8 in Grande Prairie was not worth $133. It was fine but we just don't need a $133 room, and the internet barely worked there.

It had snowed all night. The road conditions and blowing snow with insane amounts of trucks on the road made the decision to go south easy. We will go south into Montana rather than across Alberta and Saskatchewan ~ there is more snow in the forecast across these 2 provinces. That route is a little longer but likely we should save a lot on gas $ once we pass into the US.

We wanted to avoid Edmonton as we were likely to hit it close to rush-hour time so we took Rt 22 to 20 and hopped on Rt 2 South in Red Deer. We passed through Red Deer at 5pm MT. Red Deer is mid-way between Edmonton and Calgary.

We got through Calgary at 6:30pm with very little traffic. Route 2 South through Calgary is a good road and we made real good time through there. Snow is disappearing fast ~ there is very little still on the ground. Still cold but much warmer than the last few days.

We saw a Motel 6 in a town called Claresholm about halfway between Calgary and the US Border. That was a good deal at $75 + tax. Simple room and internet finally. The motel was filled with Jr Hockey Players, maybe the next Bobby Orr was in the building....

We ordered pizza (for $40!). We were done with the dogs early, about 10:30pm. After that I posted some of the logs onto the Dogtec page but still have more to do. ONAC is happening so I was able to see the goings on with that race too.
