General structure

As you can see on the diagram, the system is composed of several tables in relation with each other:
  • The account table contains information about the kennel and the owner and information to customize the pages.

  • The breeds table contains the breeds that you define.

  • The people table contains the people that you define to be used as breeders.

  • The groups table contains the groups that you define. Typically, this will be dogs in the kennel, dog for sale, studs...

  • The dog table contains information about each dog.
Each dog belongs to one account, can have one breeder and one breed, but can belong to several groups.
Each dog can also be in relation with other dogs, like it's father, mother or littermate.
The relations are protected by referential integrity, meaning that you cannot delete a record if it is in relation with another one.

General steps

When you create an account, you can notice that the system inserts several entries into the tables, based on the information you entered:
The breed you entered has been added as the default breed, you have been added as a breeder, a group called "Dogs of our kennel" has been created, and a dog called "MY FIRST DOG" has been created.
From the structure above, it is easy to understand that you gain time by first entering the elements that are going to be used by the others:

  1. Enter the other breeds for your dogs and for their ancestors. (If any)

  2. Enter the groups that you want your dogs to appear in. (This would be Puppies, Dogs for sale, Studs...)

  3. Enter the dogs, starting by the farthest away generation, so that you can use the older ones as parents in one step.
As you enter the dogs, you can quick add people to use as breeder, so you don't have to enter people ahead of time.

  4. You will notice that when you add a dog, you first create the dog with basic information and you are then redirected to a page where you can enter more detailed data.

  5. Select the groups each dog belongs to.

  6. Select the littermates.
Note: There is a shortcut to enter a whole litter by creating each dog of the litter as a littermate of the current dog.
