Group 2010--in training

Yikes, 2010!! How swiftly the years pass......... These are the chosen few to begin the main team training for next season. It actually all begins now, this spring, with the three pups being plugged in with the adults as we go shorter and shorter to wean the current main team off of longer, more intense running. It's March 18th, and the snow is melting quickly here, A couple of robins have already been spotted picking worms from the thawing earth. Those 3 10-month pups are looking like they will compete w/ the older dogs for the top positions. Gatwick is still leading extremely well, and if he is athletic and fast enough, he will greatly improve our team for next year. Besides the pups, here is the loose heirarchy from top to bottom:

Sesame, Poppy, Fatty, Miracle, Corty and Fuji (getting older and a bit slower, but both better than their sister Gala), Gallatin, Merlin, Best (also older and will be coming off having her second litter in May), Prudie, Roman, Gala, and Logan. Not a large group but a very good one.

UPDATE 10/30/09: Dodging the warm spells, we have been training regularly and are now running 10-milers, usually with a single 14-dog team while rotating in a couple of fringe dogs. Wow, everyone looks great and consistently so. The several 7-year-olds (Corty, Fuji, Best) have not slowed down or lost spark. With them, and with the other dogs that have raced and trained longer distances the past few years, this season's team will have a nice veteran base to it. We decided not to breed Best this fall in order to use her one more year for a leader. Still stepping up in that capacity are Sesame, Poppy, and Gatwick, the new kid. Surprisingly, Prudie has seemed to have gotten over her problems up front so far. She is totally wild to go and never tires or runs hot. If she can hold out as a leader, she will be a great asset. She is now passing other teams extremely well, staying focused, and even pooping on the fly. Roman and even Heathrow have also been doing a little leading too. As soon as colder weather rolls in, we'll be able to jump up the mileage easily.

UPDATE 11/28/09: Hunting season's almost over, and it's gotten colder now, but the weather during was too warm and humid for much training. This week we got a couple runs in at about 15 miles. This is still right on schedule, as we are usually doing 20's for deer season, and that's what we were doing just before. Even with a good headlamp and ATV headlights, it's difficult to see what's going on up front of a 16-dog team at night without snow on the ground. We could use some snow to cushion feet, though no trouble at all yet. We are lucky to have a lot of trail that is grass or leaf covered. However, now that the ground is getting frozen, it becomes a lot more problematic. We are updating the thumbnail text comments for the 16 dogs (note that Gala and Logan had been replaced by Cooper and Jasper).

We call Best Mama Pajama. She and her girls, Sesame and Poppy are truly three peas in a pod. Best is still a main leader for us and is doing a great job teaching the younger dogs the ropes up there. We're looking forward to breeding her again this spring.

Romie has been a slow -to- mature guy with a huge heart and a lot of attitude. Still wild at hook-up, he has a great metabolism - always fresh after runs and light on his feet.

Our only complaint about Bristol so far is that she can be, well , a real bitch to other females. Otherwise she is a sweet, kissy kind of girl. She's been running very well in the team as a yearling and we think she's on her way to becoming a mainstay.

One of the seven year olds training up with the main team, Corty still works so hard that he often wears himself out too soon. In past seasons this seems to have led to a little mental burn-out in him . Since he has always been a nervous boy for hook-up - especially at races - he might be a back-up for some of the race teams this year.

Prudie is still a very high strung energizer bunny. Lucky for us she puts it to good use in the team. She has been doing a lot of leading, mostly paired with Best and we are very excited about the maturity she's shown up there, especially with passing other teams. She is always fresh after the runs, always jumping in harness to go more even when we are back home. We have often wondered out loud what she's been eating for breakfast!

As usual, not much to say about the Fuj. Definitely the best of his litter and still a mainstay on the team. Has a completely different outlook on running than his brother, Corty.

Still the biggest smootch that ever was. A notorious neckline chewer, Gally has to be the last dog hooked-up. HIs antics while running around in the hook-up area teasing the other dogs is beyond description. He's been running well - usually in point. Not terribly hard driving, but a solid mainstay on the team.

We are still very excited about Gatwick's potential as a main leader. However his passing skills (especially head on) need work. He thinks he is supposed to pay a social visit to the other teams. So far he is always fresh after the runs, and he loves to go. A super friendly, smart boy.

Heathrow has been running well back in the team. Although he did some leading early on for shorter, easier training runs, he hasn't shown the maturity or confidence up there that his brother Gatwick has. We'll give him some more experience up there as he matures. He is a liitle softer and shy around strangers than either of his littermates but at home he is still one big talker - a favorite kennel personality. He's sort of like the boy in class that goes around pulling all the girls' ponytails.

We've decided to run Jasper in the team until he lets us know he's had enough. Though he's handed over the main leader reigns to the younger, faster dogs, he is happy as can be running anywhere in the team. Like Gally, he's a terrible chewer so he is one of the last to get hooked -up on the line. He is often standing just in front of the leaders as if he is lining them out! At ten years old he has had no problems at all keeping up with the younger dogs so far and with his daughter Prudie, makes the most noise to get going again on trail breaks.

Fatty is probably the best male on the team. An honest, solid worker, Fatty has so much fun out there. Always loves to go, loves to get roughed-up and snuggled and still does his solo mournful howls at every break.
